Physical activity is not the only factor to becoming healthy, and it especially doesn't happen over night. The food you put in your body is a huge part of your health. Exercise is wonderful and is also a huge part of a healthy lifestyle, but to lose weight, more calories have to be burnt than obtained. That is a huge key to losing weight and a healthy diet is how to accomplish it.
Diets do not have to be eating only a grain of rice for dinner. A diet can be very healthy if done properly. If you did only eat a grain of rice for the last few dinners, you are putting your body in starvation mode. When your body is in starvation mode, when you actually eat something it absorbs more calories, carbs, and sugars than your body needs because the body does not know when it will get nutrients again, causing you to gain even more weight and to become unhealthy.
Eating healthy can be very simple once in the routine. I'm not going to lie, it is somewhat difficult for some depending on your current diet. Cut out all the unhealthy snacking during the day. Instead of eating those snacks, eat simple, unprocessed snacks. This could include fresh fruits, lightly buttered, lightly salted popcorn, greek yogurt, cottage cheese, string cheese, carrots and other raw vegitables (do not use dressings or dip. The calories in them count up), and other light calorie and small snacks. An easy way to eat these healthier snacks is to substitute these snacks for the unhealthy ones you currently eat. For example, instead of eating greasy, salty potato chips, eat a handful of pretzels. When eating snacks such as pretzels, do not eat out of the bag. This causes you to eat more than should be eaten. Only a handful should be enough.
Breakfast has always been said to be the most important meal of the day. Undoubtedly, breakfast is essential for a healthy lifestyle. Breakfast boosts your metabolism and gets it ready for the day. Without breakfast, you will be hungry until lunch time causing you to over eat. Not eating breakfast can even cause more health problems, such as high blood pressure and an unhealthy assortment of blood-fats. Simply eating a granola bar or an egg in the morning before work can make all the difference.
The next step to eating healthy maybe a bit more difficult considering your daily schedule. The meals you eat throughout the day should be small and more frequent. Instead of eating only 3 meals a day with alot of not so healthy snacks in between, eat 4 or 5 meals, for example. Eating lighter and more frequent boosts your matabolism throughout the day. The meals you eat during the day can not be the kind of meals that make the button on your pants pop off because of your full belly. They should be small portioned, whole foods (ideas).
Eating healthy doesn't mean you can never eat the foods you like, no matter how unhealthy. It is all about the quantity. If you like donuts then you can eat a donut every now and then. Just don't make a habit out of it. As a general rule of dieting, there are foods to stay away from on a day to day basis, but that doesn't mean you can never eat them as a treat or special occasion. These foods to avoid are as follows:
1. Most brands of stick margarine are loaded with trans fat.
2. One hundred percent of the calories in regular soda come from sugar or high-fructose corn syrup.
3. Whole milk is loaded with saturated fat, the type of fat that raises bad cholesterol levels, promotes inflammation, and may contribute to clogged arteries.
4. Starchy white bagels are made with refined wheat flour, which has been stripped of the fiber and nutrients that give whole grains their health benefits.
5. Poptars are one of the absolute worst breakfasts you could choose to start your day. They're made with white flour and tons of added sugars.
6. Up to 80 percent of the calories in regular hot dogs come from fat, and much of it is the unhealthy saturated type.
7. Movie-theater popcorn is a calorie and fat disaster!
8. Stuffed crust pizza or pizza with greasy toppings, such as pepperonies, are not the best choice of pizza. Thin crust vegi pizza is the way to go!
Some good alternatives or foods to always have around the house are as follows:
1. Sweet potatos are loaded with carotenoids.
2. Just one cup of mango supplies 100% of a day’s vitamin C, one-third of a day’s vitamin A, a decent dose of blood-pressure-lowering potassium, and 3 grams of fiber.
3. Non-fat, plain Greek yogurt has a pleasant tartness that’s a perfect equation for the natural sweetness of berries or bananas.
4. Broccoli has lots of vitamin C, carotenoids, vitamin K and folic acid.
5. The omega-3 fats in fatty fish like salmon can help reduce the risk of sudden-death heart attacks.
6. Whole-grain rye crackers, like Wasa, Kavli, and Ryvita, usually called crispbreads, are loaded with fiber and often fat-free.
7. All beans are good beans. They’re rich in protein, fiber, iron, magnesium, potassium, and zinc.
8. Watermelon has one-third of a day’s vitamins A and C, a nice shot of potassium, and a healthy dose of lycopene for only 80 fat-free, salt-free calories.
9. Butternut squash is an easy way to get lots of vitamins A and C and fiber.
10. Leafy greens such as kale, collards, spinach, turnip greens, mustard greens, and Swiss chard are jam-packed with vitamins A, C, and K, folate, potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, lutein, and fiber.
Eating heathy can be a difficult habit to get into but will quickely become natural to you. Self-disipline and perseverance is the key to success. Eat the foods you like but in a responsible manner, as in a special occasion. Don't starve yourself to just a grain of rice, but don't ruin your jeans by eating too much and losing the button. Healthy foods are delicious and you will feel like a million bucks once you start watching the weight drop. Everyone can do it. It just takes modivation. Can you?
